The Oppo Reno6 5G - Should You Buy it in Kenya?
The Oppo Reno6 5G is an upper mid-range smartphone launched in Kenya by Oppo in September 2021. Oppo smartphones are well known for their high-quality cameras and budget friendly prices.
Keeping in line with the high-quality camera tradition, the Oppo Reno6 5G comes equipped with a triple AI camera setup at the back.
The main camera sensor is a 64MP unit that supports 4K video recording at 30fps. The other two sensors are an 8MP ultrawide and a 2MP macro camera. The front camera is a 32MP unit, which shows just how seriously Oppo takes selfies.
The Reno6 5G comes equipped with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. There’s also an international version with 12GB RAM + 256GB internal memory which we hope will become available in Kenya soon.
For some reason, the Reno6 5G lacks a memory card slot. We find it baffling that many manufacturers are adopting this trend, especially given how much space pictures and videos can take up on a smartphone. We highly recommend going for the large storage option if you can find it here in Kenya.
For the chipset, the Reno6 5G uses the MediaTek MT6877 Dimensity 900 which also supports 5G connectivity. This will definitely future-proof the phone for a few years to come.
For the battery, the Oppo Reno6 5G comes with a 4,300 mAh non-removable unit that supports 65W fast charging. Other notable features of the Reno6 5G are an under-display optical fingerprint reader, USB Type-C 3.1 and USB On-The-Go support, Android 11 with ColorOS 11.3 as well as 90Hz refresh rate for the AMOLED screen.
From the specs above, the Oppo Reno6 5G does make a good case for you to buy it. However, there are some factors you should consider first.
This smartphone lacks a 3.5mm audio jack, meaning you’ll either need to get an adapter to use your old earphones or switch to Bluetooth earphones entirely. Thankfully, as part of the new launch campaign, Oppo has included free wireless earbuds, a branded backpack as well as a smart band in the Reno6 5G sales package.
Now comes our biggest problem with the Reno6 5G, the price. You’ll currently need to part with Kshs. 60,000.00 to get your hands on this new Oppo smartphone. In our opinion, this is abit too much money for this smartphone, especially considering what the competition is offering.
For Kshs. 64,000.00, you can get a XIAOMI Mi 11T Pro, which runs on the much faster and better Snapdragon 888 chipset, has a 120Hz refresh rate screen and a larger 5,000 mAh battery. Xiaomi also have good options that cost significantly less such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro and Poco F3.
The main advantages Oppo has over its competitors are the better camera experience and a very enticing gifts package that comes with the Oppo Reno6 5G.
So back to our question. Should you buy the Reno6 5G or not? If you get the promotional package with the free earbuds, branded bag and free smartwatch then definitely yes, it’s a good deal. However, if you’re only getting the phone without the added goodies, then we recommend at least checking out what the competitors have to offer here in Kenya before spending your hard-earned cash.
